Vaxxel is pioneering the development of an intranasal live-attenuated multivalent vaccine targeting respiratory infections caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Their proprietary METAVAC® platform utilizes a highly replicative and hyperfusogenic clinical HMPV strain, which has been genetically modified to ensure non-reversible attenuation. This innovative approach allows for the production of a vaccine candidate that is both infectious and replicative in human airway epithelium while maintaining a low inflammatory profile. The vaccine has demonstrated protection against HMPV and RSV challenges in preclinical models, showing strong induction of neutralizing antibodies and minimal pathogenicity.

The METAVAC® RSV-HMPV vaccine candidate is designed for administration via the intranasal route, targeting a significant market of over $5 billion. Vaxxel's ongoing research indicates that the vaccine can stimulate mucosal immunity and a robust Th1 cellular response, making it a promising candidate for immunizing vulnerable populations, including children and older adults. With a focus on genomic stability and process optimization, Vaxxel aims to ensure the vaccine's efficacy and safety, with plans to initiate Phase I clinical trials in Q3 2025. The anticipated target population for this vaccine includes approximately 200 million individuals in the EU and US, highlighting its potential impact on public health.
