Severe alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency

Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is a protein that is produced mostly in the &nbsp;liver. Its primary function is to protect the lungs from neutrophil &nbsp;elastase. Neutrophil elastase is an enzyme that normally serves a useful &nbsp;purpose in lung tissue-it digests damaged or aging cells and bacteria &nbsp;to promote healing. However, if left unchecked, it will also attack &nbsp;healthy lung tissue. Alpha-1 antitrypsin, in sufficient amounts, will &nbsp;trap and destroy neutrophil elastase before it has a chance to begin &nbsp;damaging the delicate lung tissue. Consequently, if an individual &nbsp;doesn’t have enough alpha-1 antitrypsin, the enzyme goes unchecked and &nbsp;attacks the lung.
The only specific treatment for AATD is the enzyme alpha-1 antitrypsin &nbsp;(intravenous infusion of purified, human AAT) to prevent the progression &nbsp;of lung disease, aiming to increase the level of alpha-1 antitrypsin in &nbsp;the blood. Skin problems usually get better when the enzyme is given.

Hyperimmune therapy refers to the administration of specific antibodies against an infectious agent, &nbsp;to an unprotected individual, for the prevention or treatment of a &nbsp;given disease. Such antibodies are concentrated from plasma. The concept &nbsp;previously shown to be effective in the treatment of severe acute viral &nbsp;infections, such as rabies, hepatitis, CMV and others.
The role of antibodies is to bind antigens, such as &nbsp;viruses and bacteria, and trigger their neutralization and destruction &nbsp;as part of the immune response against pathogens.
This approach can be implemented utilizing Kamada’s &nbsp;established technology, allowing the development and manufacturing of &nbsp;specific plasma-derived immunoglobulin products in a relatively short &nbsp;period.
The development process starts with collecting &nbsp;plasma from patients who recover from COVID-19 (referred to as &nbsp;“convalescent plasma” and “convalescent patients”, respectively).
