Optune Lua is a wearable, portable, FDA-approved device used together with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors (immunotherapy) or docetaxel. It is indicated for adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC) who have progressed on or after a platinum-based regimen.

LUNAR is a pivotal study testing the safety and effectiveness of TTFields when used together with immune checkpoint inhibitors or docetaxel (experimental arm) versus immune checkpoint inhibitors or docetaxel alone (control arm) for patients with stage 4 NSCLC who progressed during or after platinum-based therapy. It is estimated that approximately 46,000 patients receive second-line treatment for stage 4 NSCLC each year in the U.S. The primary endpoint is superior overall survival of patients treated with TTFields plus immune checkpoint inhibitors or docetaxel versus immune checkpoint inhibitors or docetaxel alone. The powered secondary endpoints are superior overall survival of patients treated with TTFields plus immune checkpoint inhibitor versus immune checkpoint inhibitor alone (ICI cohort) and superior overall survival of patients treated with TTFields plus docetaxel versus docetaxel alone (docetaxel cohort). TTFields is intended principally for use with other concomitant standard-of-care treatments, and LUNAR was designed to generate data that contemplates multiple outcomes, all of which Novocure believes will be clinically meaningful.

The METIS study (also known as the “EF-25”) is a pivotal (analogous to a Phase 3 drug trial), randomized, controlled study, designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) generated by a medical device, NovoTTF-200M <a href="https://novocuretrials.com/cancer-clinical-trials/brain-cancer-clinical-trial-metis/#section-1" rel="noopener" target="_blank">[About TTFields]</a>&nbsp;in patients with 1-10 newly diagnosed brain metastases from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). TTFields are administered to patients concomitantly with the best standard of care treatments that would normally be used to treat this condition. Optune Gio delivers Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) therapy to the region of the tumor.Optune Gio, previously known as Optune, is a noninvasive, antimitotic cancer treatment for glioblastoma (GBM).
 
TTFields therapy uses electric fields to physically disrupt cell division. TTFields therapy does not stimulate or heat tissue and targets dividing cancer cells of a specific size. TTFields therapy takes advantage of the special characteristics and geometrical shape of dividing cells, which make them susceptible to the effects of the alternating electric fields. TTFields therapy causes minimal damage to healthy cells. Mild to moderate skin irritation is the most common side effect reported. TTFields therapy is approved in certain countries for the treatment of adults with glioblastoma, malignant pleural mesothelioma and pleural mesothelioma, some of the most difficult cancer types to treat.
